Event Recap: Echoes of the Past Screening – Fórum Machico, Madeira Island – 16 August 2025

Cinema lovers who missed out on the sold-out evening at Fórum Machico were, quite simply, absent from a moment of rare enchantment. From the opening frames of Echoes of the Past to the exclusive unveiling of a chapter from The Art of Fermentation: From Orchard to Table, the night unfolded like a secret whispered only to those fortunate enough to attend.

The screening transported guests into Ava Ferrera’s world of quiet longing and visual poetry. Its resonant themes—heritage, memory, art—echoed through every lens and frame. After the film, conversation continued as guests sampled regional ciders and canapés by Chef Duarte, accompanied by Amaro’s live music. Meanwhile, upstairs, the Machico Fachos Festival exhibition added a layer of cultural richness, offering another sensory portal into Madeira’s story.

And when the house lights dimmed, luckier visitors gathered with Ava Ferrera and producer Luís Mendonça, forging intimate connections that made the evening feel less like a premiere and more like a shared ritual.

If there was one regret to hold onto—it’s that this was more than an event. It was a cinematic communion. And if you weren’t there… you should be ready for the next invitation.

"The short film is Ava's perspective on how a group of young people revived the tradition of cider production on Madeira Island, bringing a breath of fresh air to this product.

In poetic form, Ava speaks about how what The Drunken Pharmacist and others are doing are like echoes of the past. How we are touched by the past and how we carry it into the present.

Honoring those who came before and the tradition itself so that this knowledge and others do not die or fade away without being recorded. A knowledge that has passed down through generations and now resonates through the union of past and present so that more young people can also look to those who came before with respect.

The beauty of this short film touches all of us who, in one way or another, have a sense of grounding.

In the end, Luís Mendonça, the renowned alchemist behind these magical ciders from Drunken Pharmacist, highlighted something important: that an entire community can work in unison to keep traditions alive.

However, I believe that more than just the way a young group managed to create these dynamics and partnerships between different generations and cider-making methods, it only shows above all that when Man dreams, the work is born, and that walking together always tastes much better.

The full documentary "The Art of Fermentation - From the Orchard to the Table" will be released in October.
We saw a glimpse of what's to come, and I can't wait for the premiere.

I tasted ciders from different producers with canapés from Chef Duarte Oliveira, accompanied by music by Amaro, who created the soundtrack for the films."
