"Echoes of the Past" Directed by Ava Ferrera - Festival Film Review
“Echoes of the Past” distinguished itself at the Berlin Short Film Awards through its striking visual language and its deep sense of cultural memory.
Ava Ferrera’s cinematography blends sweeping natural imagery with intimate, tactile moments, creating a film that feels both timeless and profoundly contemporary. We were proud to recognise a work that captures tradition with such elegance and emotional clarity.
“Echoes of the Past” is a rare documentary that truly understands how imagery can carry memory.
Ferrera’s camera moves with quiet confidence, lingering on textures, colours, and landscapes that reflect the inner lives of a generation rediscovering a fading craft. The contrast between vast, almost mythic natural vistas and close, detail-driven shots transforms the film into a meditation on continuity: what is preserved from the past, and what risks slipping away.
At the Berlin Short Film Awards, the film stood out to our jury for its formal precision, visual cohesion, and its sensitive exploration of heritage. It is a work where cinematography becomes a vessel of cultural preservation, executed with both nuance and depth.
What most impressed our jury was how Ava Ferrera’s cinematography elevates a simple act — crafting cider — into a visual dialogue between past and present. Her command of colour, composition, and natural light turns each frame into something vivid and contemplative. The
sweeping ocean imagery, rich saturated tones, and tactile close-ups create a sensorial world where tradition continues to breathe.

“Innovation combined with tradition — this is the path to generating income in agriculture.” These were the words of the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries, Nuno Maciel, who attended another edition of “Jardim da Serra – Food Matching – Aromas, Colors, and Flavors,” an initiative by CDISA – the Center for Development and Innovation, aimed at promoting and preserving regional products.

In his remarks, the Regional Secretary highlighted the importance of agri-food processing, emphasizing that it is one of the “quickest ways to bring more income” to producers. He also praised the work carried out by CDISA: “A voluntary, free, yet genuine effort,” said Nuno Maciel, recalling the value of the association’s work in preserving many crops for the benefit of Madeiran agriculture.

Maciel also noted that there are several examples proving it is possible to make a living exclusively from agriculture, stressing the need to innovate without ever compromising the quality that distinguishes regional production.

On the occasion, Manuel Neto, the association’s president, presented a gastronomic route for Jardim da Serra, created to promote local products. To support this, an online platform (www.cdisa.pt) was launched, where the public can access schedules, route points, menus, and respective prices.

The “Jardim da Serra – Food Matching – Aromas, Colors, and Flavors” initiative also featured the screening of the short film “Echoes of the Past – The Art of Fermentation,” by Ava Ferrera, which demonstrated the entire artisanal cider-making process in Madeira and the importance this product has held for several generations within the regional economy and gastronomy.

Lastly, but no less important, the event included a themed dinner dedicated to pairing Madeira PGI Ciders with traditional regional dishes.
Twelve ciders were entered in the competition, evaluated by attendees, among them members of the AgroSenseLab Tasting Panel from the Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and Fisheries.
