SUMMER 2026 FEATURE FILM DOCUMENTARY
Premiere

The Art of Fermentation will premiere this summer, marking the next chapter in Ferrera’s exploration of memory, land, and living tradition.
Set against the landscapes of Madeira, the film traces the delicate process through which time, nature, and human hands converge — transforming fruit into something enduring. At once intimate and expansive, it reveals fermentation not only as a craft, but as a reflection of heritage, patience, and continuity.
The premiere will open with 'Echoes of the Past', Ferrera’s internationally award-winning short documentary, presented as an overture to the feature — a prelude that echoes the feature film’s deeper themes of memory and cultural inheritance.
With a visual language rooted in stillness and texture, The Art of Fermentation invites the viewer into a world shaped by rhythm — where each gesture carries the weight of generations, and every transformation speaks to a deeper connection between people and place.
The official premiere date will be announced soon.
The films presented:
'Echoes of the Past' in English with Portuguese subtitles.
'A Arte da Fermentação' in Portuguese with English subtitles.

Event Recap: Echoes of the Past Premiere – Fórum Machico, Madeira Island – 16 August 2025
Cinema lovers who missed out on the sold-out evening at Fórum Machico were, quite simply, absent from a moment of rare enchantment. From the opening frames of Echoes of the Past to the exclusive unveiling of a chapter from The Art of Fermentation: From Orchard to Table, the night unfolded like a secret whispered only to those fortunate enough to attend.
The screening transported guests into Ava Ferrera’s world of quiet longing and visual poetry. Its resonant themes—heritage, memory, art—echoed through every lens and frame. After the film, conversation continued as guests sampled regional ciders and canapés by Chef Duarte Oliveira, accompanied by Amaro’s live music. Meanwhile, upstairs, the Machico Fachos Festival exhibition added a layer of cultural richness, offering another sensory portal into Madeira’s story.
And when the house lights dimmed, luckier visitors gathered with Ava Ferrera and producer Luís Mendonça, forging intimate connections that made the evening feel less like a premiere and more like a shared ritual.
If there was one regret to hold onto—it’s that this was more than an event. It was a cinematic communion. And if you weren’t there… you should be ready for the next invitation.
